Council Tax Kept Low

In 2014 and 2015 Labour Councillors voted to freeze Council tax bills and we remained absolutely committed to keeping any increase as low as possible.
However, this year we will have no choice but to collect what the chancellor George Osborne has called his Adult Social Care precept charge adding about 2% to the average bill. Nobody denies that money is needed to support vital services for the vulnerable and elderly, however, we believe that the national Government should have found the money nationally to support services and not in a cowardly way asked Councils to collect the money for them.

In terms of local services we have kept the increase to about 50p per week as despite the Government cuts this will allow us to keep delivering those services that matter most.

Under the last Tory administration, council tax increased 14.8%, which put a real strain on many ordinary families’ finances.
