The current government is hopelessly weak on crime, and even weaker on the causes of crime. Recorded crime is rising across the country – in particular the most violent crimes like knife attacks. It has become a major national problem that the government can no longer ignore.
Since 2010, Conservative ministers have been repeatedly warned that their cuts would have grave consequences, but they have refused to listen. Statistics released earlier this year are a damning indictment of the Tories record of failure on policing and crime. But its not just violent crime or knife crime that is on the rise. Across Croydon anti-social behaviour, moped crime, burglary and other street crimes are on the rise too as criminals have lost respect for the law as police numbers have fallen.
Police officers across the country are doing an incredible job in extremely difficult circumstances. But following the huge central government cuts, national police officer numbers have fallen to the lowest level in more than three decades.
20,000 officers have been lost across England.
Croydon Labour are saying enough is enough. As the lead group on Croydon council Labour are investing what we can in improving the safety of our streets and have committed funds for 20 new enforcement officers across the borough, but as a local authority we can only do so much. We need to send Theresa May a message that these damaging police cuts need to end. The safety of our streets is not a commodity we are willing to sacrifice to austerity. We need a police force funded for the many, not the few.
If you agree please sign the petition below.
We the undersigned call on Theresa May and the Conservative government to reverse the damaging police cuts which are impacting our streets. We are calling for a police force across England that gets the funds it needs to keep our streets safe and reduces crime.
