Sack Southern

It is time to Sack Southern.

east-croydonCroydon is an ambitious and growing town. From cleaning up our streets to seeing inward investment and new business start ups every day, Croydon is getting its act together. In 2014 our town was held back by a local Tory Party who had mismanaged the town’s finances, leaving a £100m black hole, and who held a pessimistic view for the town’s future.

Since our Labour council was elected we have started to deliver that ambitious vision of Croydon we see more and more every day. However that vision is only possible if our town is provided for with well managed and efficient public services. A reliable and affordable train service in Croydon is a necessity, not a luxury.

Govia Thameslink, the company responsible for the Southern Rail franchise, have completely failed to deliver that reliable and affordable service. Whether it is staff shortage, industrial relations or managing the impact of engineering and expansion works the company has proven to be completely inadequate at delivering the service members of the public pay for. And whilst regularly causing havoc for train users they continue to receive a tax payer funded grant and post millions of pounds in profits.

Enough is enough.

We have started a petition calling on the Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling MP, to Sack Southern Rail, and bring the franchise currently held by Govia Thameslink in to Transport for London (TFL) control under the democratic oversight of our newly elected Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.

Dear Chris Grayling MP, Minister of State for Transport,

We the undersigned call upon you to immediately strip Govia Thameslink Railway of the Southern train contract and pass responsibility for managing the service to Transport for London, which operates under the democratic oversight of the directly elected and accountable Mayor of London.

As residents of the London Borough of Croydon, we have also asked Croydon Council to use its resources and influence to support and campaign for this objective.

We hope you can support this campaign and we hope to continue to work with you in delivering the ambitious vision for Croydon we all hold.

Cllr Stuart King, Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment
