As Councillors we used some of our ward budget to support the development of a Community Orchard in Addiscombe Railway Park. Lauren, from Friends of Addiscombe Railway Park commented:
“Thank you to the 29 people from Addiscombe and the surrounding area who joined us at our Community Orchard Planting day on the 10th Jan in Addiscombe Railway Park. The sun shone for us (mostly!) and together we were able to successfully plant 12 new fruit trees of apple, plum and pear, the result of a successful bid for a small grant supported by our ward councillors. The new trees are in addition to our existing 4 fruit trees of cherry, plum, apple and apricot and our very old and very rare beloved Blackjack Apple tree. Thank you also to the Friends of Ashburton Park who gifted us 200 daffodil bulbs, which were planted among the orchard trees. Volunteers were rewarded with home-made cakes, chocolate biscuits, freshly brewed tea and hot mulled cider. Once in the ground the trees will need to be loved and nurtured for years to come, including watering, pruning, clearing away weeds and of course picking fruit! This year we are also planning to build a community garden where people can grow food and flowers together, connecting with nature and their neighbours. We meet on the 2nd Sunday of every month in the park to undertake conservation and improvement works in the park, we would love you to join us. See our website, facebook page and twitter site for more information”
If you have any ideas on how we can use the ward budget do get in touch.
