This morning stations across Croydon were either closed to commuters or had dangerous numbers of people on the station and passenger safety was at risk.
Southern Rail and Thameslink were advising passengers not to travel in to London Victoria because of a power outage in the Streatham area. While this specific incident is the fault of the Government’s failure to properly invest in infrastructure, for passengers this is simply the latest in a litany of failures by Southern Rail and Thameslink to provide a reliable service.
Croydon commuters have had enough. Whether it is dealing with infrastructure works, industrial disputes, timetable changes or track issues Southern have shown it is not up to the challenge of running the crucial rail services which serve our borough and its residents. No rail replacement bus service has been made available to the majority of passengers in Croydon today, leaving them unable to get to work or to get home afterwards.
Enough is enough.
The impact these failures are having on our Borough are huge, it is affecting thousands of our constituents, businesses and visitors. Therefore we are calling once again for the Southern Rail and Govia Thameslink franchises to be stripped from their private provider and taken in to TfL control, with oversight given to our Labour Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.
You can join us by signing the petition below.
Cllr Tony Newman, Leader Croydon Council Sarah Jones MP, Croydon Central Steve Reed MP OBE, Croydon North
Dear Chris Grayling MP, Minister of State for Transport,
We the undersigned call upon you to immediately strip Govia Thameslink Railway of the Southern train contract and pass responsibility for managing the service to Transport for London, which operates under the democratic oversight of the directly elected and accountable Mayor of London.
As residents of the London Borough of Croydon, we have also asked Croydon Council to use its resources and influence to support and campaign for this objective.
We hope you can support this campaign and we hope to continue to work with you in delivering the ambitious vision for Croydon we all hold.
